Leaps and Bounds: Phrase-ology
Lorelei is growing by leaps and bounds---I am constantly amazed at all that she is learning and can do. This (probably lengthy, multi-part) post is to help me remember all that she does at this stage.
Phrases that we frequently hear:
1. "Stuck!" Yes, things get stuck. Lorelei is stuck in the car seat, the lid is stuck on the container, the (childproofed) cabinets are stuck and won't open. A chorus of "Stuck, stuck, stuck!" is usually followed by...
2. "Help, peas!" (Help please). Aww. She is so polite!
3. "I do it! I do it!" Lorelei loves to assert her independence and do things herself. She enjoys the challenge of the buckles on her stroller, attempting to put on shoes, and she loves to try and put on her own pants. She is frequently successful with shorts (although they are sometimes "uh-oh" where somehow both legs end up in the same side), but pants are so much more tricky. Lorelei often refuses help with putting on pants, so there is a lot of "no pants dance" around the house until she is more agreeable to some assistance.
4. "I did it!" Hooray! Lorelei is so proud of herself when she accomplishes a task. I love to hear this phrase, especially when she has worked hard to get what she wanted (like a tricky wooden puzzle piece into the board).
5. "Away!" As in, "Mommy, I need some space". This could be over anything-- too close during lunch (perhaps she thinks I'll steal some of her strawberries), to simply wanting to do something on her own (see "I do it" above), or just wanting attention from either mommy or daddy (but not both together).
6. "No way!" This one cracks me up; I think she picked it up from her friends at daycare.
7. "All better!" Ah, if only life were always this simple: something is stuck, broken, gently bumped, on the floor, etc. and mommy or daddy (or even Lorelei) can quickly make it "all better".
8. "A mess! A mess!" A mess could be anything from a full scale toy disaster to a teeny tiny leftover crumb on the highchair tray. Lorelei likes her world to be clean. The best is when she makes a mess and then goes, "Uh oh! A mess!" When I ask her who made the mess she looks thoughtful and then says "Lor-e-lei! Lorelei's mess!"
9. "I nekkid!" Lorelei loves to run around the house after bath time, with her towel flowing behind her like a cape, proudly proclaiming that she has yet to put on her jammies.
10. "Bump, bump!" We live off of a gravel drive and there are a couple of speed bumps on the way to daycare--either way, Lorelei is in for a fun, bumpy ride and she lets us know it!
