The new girls in town
At some point Steve talked me into agreeing to have chickens. I was pretty skeptical at first (I always am), but have truly enjoyed the newest residents of Cottage Lane. Our girls were a lovely housewarming gift from friends, who very kindly raised them from the fluffy chick stage until they were pullets (teenagers) and ready to live outdoors. Steve put his carpenter skills to work and built them a lovely chicken palace (the coop and yard) and has just recently expanded their run area. Lorelei loves the chickens and always wants to give them treats and check for eggs.
Gertrude is the reddish-brown hen and began laying a couple of weeks ago (earlier than we expected). She has faithfully been giving us one beautiful brown egg a day. Louise is the black and white speckled hen behind Gertrude in the photo above, Dorothy is the gray hen (we are expecting blue eggs from her) and Mildred is the black and gold speckeled hen to the far right, she has a beautiful feather ruff around her neck.
Steve already has plans to expand our flock by two next year as he discovered the very cool "mohawk" chickens.
